Planning for a Stay at the Nexus Neurospecialty Program

The Nexus Neurospecialty Program understands that you may have questions about your stay or the stay of a loved one at our hospital.  It is our goal to provide advanced medical care in a comfortable environment and we believe that family members are an important part of the healthcare team and recovery process.  We welcome your questions.  Please ask the hospital’s team of doctors, nurses, and healthcare professionals if you have any questions about your treatment or stay at our hospital.

Upon admission to the Nexus Neurospecialty Program, each patient receives a patient handbook that includes information about the hospital, our patient and guest services, billing information, and patient rights and responsibilities.  To help you learn more about a prospective stay at the Nexus Neurospecialty Program, we’ve listed the answers to many frequently asked questions (FAQs) below.

1.     What are your visiting hours?

Regular visiting hours are between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. daily, but families may visit the hospital at any time 24 hours a day.  After 8:00 p.m., visitors must ring the door bell at the side entrance to be allowed entry by hospital staff.

2.     What clothes should I bring?

The hospital provides hospital gowns.  However, patients may bring comfortable button down or zippered clothing and non-skid slippers.  The hospital does not provide laundry services for personal clothing.

3.     Are meals available for family members?

Meals are for patients of the hospital only.  A kitchenette with a microwave oven and refrigerator are available for family use.  Additionally, vending machines and coffee are available 24 hours a day.

4.     Where do I park?

The hospital has complimentary self-parking immediately adjacent to the hospital.  Visitors may park in any undesignated open parking space.

5.     What are the rooms like?

The hospital has twelve private rooms, four semi-private rooms, and one three-bed room.  Each room provides satellite television and has large windows.

6.     Does the hospital provide internet access?

Nexus Specialty Hospital provides wireless access to the internet in patient rooms and hospital common areas.

7.     What services are available at the hospital?

The medical treatment plan for each patient is led by a physician.  The physician works closely with the nursing, therapy, and allied health team to provide care for our patients.  The hospital is staffed 24 hours a day with registered nurses (RNs), licensed vocational nurses (LVNs), respiratory therapists (RTs), and certified nursing assistants (CNAs). In addition, patients may receive physical therapy (PT), occupational therapy (OT), speech therapy (ST), and wound care nursing services.  Other professionals that will work with patients during a stay include a registered dietitian, case manager, and social worker.  Additionally, the hospital provides onsite pharmacy services.

8.     What types of diagnoses and conditions are treated at the Touchstone at Nexus program?

The Nexus Neurospecialty Program offers services to individuals with traumatic or acquired brain injuries or other neurologic diseases and conditions.  This includes conditions such as strokes, cerebrovascular accidents (CVAs), spinal cord injuries, anoxic injuries, toxic exposure, post-neurologic surgery, and various progressive neurological disorders.  Some individuals in our program have neurobehavioral issues which may result in difficulty with self-regulation or self-control, impulse control, over arousal, frustration tolerance and problems in perception.  They may overreact to situations, get angry without provocation, or behave in socially inappropriate ways.  The Nexus Neurospecialty Program addresses the medical, rehabilitative, behavioral, and psychosocial issues resulting from brain injuries or neurologic conditions.

9.     What is the average day like for a patient at the Touchstone at Nexus program?

The average day for a patient at the Nexus Neurospecialty Program consists of a highly structured schedule of therapeutic, recreational, and social programming.  We provide physical, occupational, speech, cognitive therapy during the day.  Additionally, the therapeutic team focuses on teaching patients skills to achieve maximum independence.  Each patient will receive an individualized daily schedule developed by the treatment team with input from the family about the patient’s hobbies and interests.  Individuals with neurologic disabilities benefit from treatment in programs that offer multiple opportunities for learning, provide reinforcement through practice, and focus on pragmatic and functional skills which the person will need to return to a life of independence.

10.  How often are patients seen by a therapist?

The ability of a patient to tolerate therapy is determined by the hospital medical and therapy team.  Therapy schedules are determined by each patient’s individual medical needs and his or her ability to tolerate therapy.

11.  What is the typical length of stay for a patient at the Touchstone Program?

Because neurological injuries vary considerably, length of stay is determined largely by the extent of the injury and the patient’s ability to engage in rehabilitation. Our average length of stay is two months, but we can also accommodate individuals seeking a longer continuum of care.

12.  If the patient requires services upon discharge, who will help to set up these services?

Our case management team will work with the patient and family to discuss community services and resources that may be available to assist the patient and family.

13.  Who can I contact if I have other questions about Nexus Specialty Hospital?
